TRASH COMPACTORS

TO GET AN IDEA of just how much trash, including bottles, cans, cartons and paper, a trash compactor can compact, visualize two over-flowing 20-gallon garbage cans holding, say, 40 pounds. The trash compactor can take this junk and reduce its volume (not its weight) into a neat package of approximately 9 inches by 16 inches by 17 inches. This package, which in most cases is also deodorized, is then placed but for the trash collector.
Electrically, a trash compactor re-quires no more than any other major appliance. A grounded 120-volt electrical supply is needed that conforms to local electrical codes. The unit should be plugged into its own 15-ampere circuit. Most units are designed to slip beneath standard kitchen countertops or, if you wish, you can leave the compactor free-standing. The unit must be level, however. This is accomplished by turning leveling legs screwed into the base of the compactor until the bubble of a carpenter's level zeroes itself, telling you that the compactor is straight.

USE OF BASKET WITHOUT BAGS

1. Be sure basket release handle is in vertical position.
2. Place trash directly into the basket. It is recommended that you place several sheets of newspaper at the bottom of the basket first, when bags are not being used. This will minimize the clean-up of the basket, after emptying compacted trash. Note: Compacting a folded newspaper on top of loose trash in the drawer will help keep the ram clean of trash or broken glass.
3. Remove the basket when trash is compacted to about 4 or 5 inches below the top of the basket. If you find this too heavy, compact less trash the next time. Remember, the weight of the compacted trash will vary with the contents of the trash. Cans and bottles may weigh more than paper products. You will be able to judge the desired compacted amount after a few loads.
To remove the trash basket when trash is compacted to desired level, proceed as follows:
1. Place basket-release handle in down position. Lift built-in storage compartment cover, and leave in the Up position.
2. Grasp both handles of the basket and remove it from drawer. Carry the basket to trash storage area.
3. Pull the handles of the two-piece basket away from each other.
