INSTALLING AND MOVING A REFRIGERATOR OR FREEZER
Consider a refrigerator with casters. You'll find that rolling it rather than pushing it to clean underneath is easier on you and the floor. But don't get casters if you have a soft vinyl floor covering; they'll leave imprints in the vinyl. Which freezer style is best? Depends on your needs. A chest uses less energy because its cold air, which is heavier than warm air, stays inside when you open the top. But an upright takes up less floor space. And since its contents are easier to reach, you probably won't keep the door open as long when you look for food. At room temperatures below 60° F a unit won't run often enough to keep food properly cold. Lay a carpenter's level on top of a a new or relocated unit to make sure that it's level. If it isn't, tilt the unit back and prop it with a wood block. Then screw the leveling logs in or out a few turns, remove the block, and check again. Confirm your owner's manual to adjust casters or a different type of legs. Before transporting a refrigerator or a freezer, turn it off 10" a clay. Take out all removable parts. Secure the doors with rope. Move it upright not on its side or back. To move a refrigerator without casters, tilt it and slip pieces of carpet scrap, pile side down, under the front and back legs.If your refrigerator has an automatic ice maker, the water tube attached to it limits how far you can pull the unit from the wall. When discarding an old refrigerator or freezer, remove the doors to prevent a child from crawling in and getting trapped. When storing a freezer or refrigerator, secure the door with strong tape or rope. To prevent mildew, however, use a wood block to keep the door not to open.
